Tangkuban Perahu: The Timeless Allure of West Java’s Active Volcano

BANDUNG BARAT, kiprahkita.net - Gunung Marapi, one of the active volcanoes in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, was once a favorite destination for mountain climbers.

However, an eruption on Saturday, December 3, 2023, drastically changed its appeal.

The eruption tragically injured and claimed the lives of dozens of climbers passing through the Marapi Nature Tourism Park (TWA).

Following this disaster, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) raised Marapi’s alert level from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Standby) in early January 2024, due to heightened volcanic activity.

While the status was eventually lowered to Level II, the ongoing volcanic activity has led authorities to maintain a ban on climbing.

In late October, a group of journalists and members of Tanah Datar’s Information and Communication Office (Dinas Kominfo) visited the crater of Mount Tangkuban Parahu, another active volcano in West Java, while in Bandung.

Tangkuban Parahu, famous for its scenic craters, last erupted on July 26, 2019, prompting temporary closures.

However, today, Tangkuban Parahu has reopened, drawing thousands of visitors each week, highlighting a stark contrast with Marapi’s restricted access due to its high volcanic activity.

This visit provided Tanah Datar’s journalists with valuable insights into managing volcanic tourist areas, knowledge they hope will benefit Marapi’s Nature Tourism Park management once the volcano’s activity decreases and conditions become safe for visitors again.

The Appeal of Tangkuban Parahu’s Unique Landscape

Located around 30 kilometers from Bandung, Mount Tangkuban Parahu’s allure extends beyond its active craters.

The mountain’s silhouette, resembling an overturned boat, inspired its name, “Tangkuban Parahu,” which means “overturned boat” in the Sundanese language.

The active craters and scenic beauty attract thousands of visitors each week.

Among Tangkuban Parahu’s most captivating features are its active craters, particularly Kawah Ratu, the main attraction where visitors can view sulfur smoke billowing up and inhale the distinct sulfuric scent.

Visitors can also explore Kawah Domas, a crater allowing close-up views of natural hot springs and fumaroles. Here, a unique experience awaits as visitors can boil eggs in the hot waters, adding a touch of adventure to their trip.

Despite its beauty, the volcano’s activity serves as a reminder of the natural forces beneath.

The 2019 eruption was a stark reminder of Tangkuban Parahu’s volatility, and the management frequently adjusts visitor access to prioritize safety.

The Legendary Sangkuriang Tale

Beyond its geological wonders, Tangkuban Parahu holds deep cultural significance, rooted in the legend of Sangkuriang. The tale, cherished in Sundanese and Javanese folklore, tells of Sangkuriang, a young man who unknowingly falls in love with his own mother, Dayang Sumbi.

When his love is rejected, he kicks the boat he failed to complete, which lands upside-down and is believed to have become Tangkuban Parahu.

This legend, passed down through generations, lends an aura of mystique to the mountain, making it more than just a natural destination. Local people believe that the mountain’s mystical atmosphere is shaped by this tale, adding a layer of enchantment for visitors.

A Refreshing Escape

At an altitude of about 2,084 meters above sea level, Tangkuban Parahu offers cool, crisp mountain air, making it a favorite retreat from city life.

From the crater’s peak, visitors can savor breathtaking views of lush pine forests, verdant tea plantations, and sprawling mountain vistas.

This blend of pristine nature and unique mountain contours makes Tangkuban Perahu an ideal spot for nature photography and adventure.

Educational and Environmental Stewardship

Beyond its natural appeal, Tangkuban Parahu serves as an educational site where visitors learn about volcanoes and geology.

Tour guides provide insights into volcanic history, crater activity, and essential safety tips. This educational aspect is vital, as Tangkuban Parahu remains an active volcano with ever-changing statuses.

Efforts to preserve the environment are also a priority. Visitors are encouraged to keep the area clean, and certain zones are restricted to ensure safety and environmental conservation.

An Everlasting Wonder

Tangkuban Parahu stands as a testament to nature’s wonders, blending stunning landscapes, volcanic activity, cultural legends, and environmental awareness.

With active craters, refreshing air, captivating views, and the mythical tale of Sangkuriang, Tangkuban Parahu remains a timeless attraction.

Each visitor not only enjoys its scenic beauty but also experiences a slice of history and legend that lives within the mountain.(musriadi musanif)
