BANDUNG BARAT, kiprahkita.net - Gunung Marapi, one of the active volcanoes in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, was once a favorite destination for mountain climbers.
However, an eruption on Saturday, December 3, 2023, drastically changed its appeal.
The eruption tragically injured and claimed the lives of dozens of climbers passing through the Marapi Nature Tourism Park (TWA).
Following this disaster, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) raised Marapi’s alert level from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Standby) in early January 2024, due to heightened volcanic activity.
While the status was eventually lowered to Level II, the ongoing volcanic activity has led authorities to maintain a ban on climbing.
In late October, a group of journalists and members of Tanah Datar’s Information and Communication Office (Dinas Kominfo) visited the crater of Mount Tangkuban Parahu, another active volcano in West Java, while in Bandung.
Tangkuban Parahu, famous for its scenic craters, last erupted on July 26, 2019, prompting temporary closures.
However, today, Tangkuban Parahu has reopened, drawing thousands of visitors each week, highlighting a stark contrast with Marapi’s restricted access due to its high volcanic activity.
This visit provided Tanah Datar’s journalists with valuable insights into managing volcanic tourist areas, knowledge they hope will benefit Marapi’s Nature Tourism Park management once the volcano’s activity decreases and conditions become safe for visitors again.
The Appeal of Tangkuban Parahu’s Unique Landscape
Located around 30 kilometers from Bandung, Mount Tangkuban Parahu’s allure extends beyond its active craters.
The mountain’s silhouette, resembling an overturned boat, inspired its name, “Tangkuban Parahu,” which means “overturned boat” in the Sundanese language.
